Democratic Women’s Caucus Hold Virtual Meeting Discussion: The Power of Women’s Right to Vote: Our History & Future

June 18, 2020
Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) Co-Chairs Reps. Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14), Lois Frankel (FL-21), Jackie Speier (CA-14), and Vice Chairs Reps. Veronica Escobar (TX-16) and Deb Haaland (NM-01) will host a virtual meeting on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 to discuss how women have fought for voting rights, our role in protecting the right to vote against constant attacks, and why diverse women’s voices matter in our democracy. Also joining the roundtable are the Honorable Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives; Stacey Abrams, Founder, Fair Fight Action; Maria Teresa Kumar, President, Voto Latino; and Kristen Clarke, President and Executive Director, National Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

August 26, 2020 commemorates the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote. The culmination of decades of tireless activism by pioneers of the women’s suffrage movement is celebrated today to honor their courage and sacrifice, and to remind women that our work is far from finished. As we celebrate the anniversary of the 19th Amendment, we must also understand the crucial role women play to protect access to the ballot box.  In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, and as the Trump Administration continues to threaten American’s Constitutional right to participate in our elections, women must work to ensure all voices are heard.
