Haaland Calls on McConnell to Put Paycheck Fairness Act to a Vote Citing Native Women’s Equal Pay Day
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01) called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to put the Paycheck Fairness Act to a vote, raising awareness of the gender pay gap that puts Native women behind in earnings by an extra nine months on Native Women’s Equal Pay Day:
“Women deserve equal pay for equal work, but our country doesn’t hold employers responsible for only paying Native women 58 cents on the dollar compared to white men in similar positions. Meanwhile, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is holding up a vote on the Pay Check Fairness Act which fixes that problem. As a single mom who was the sole breadwinner for my family, I know how the pay gap impacts so many other issues including access to health care, education, job training and child care.
“More than a year ago, the House passed the Paycheck Fairness Act to address loopholes in the law that allow employers to pay women less than men for the same job. It makes sure we’re addressing the root causes of the gender pay gap, like using pay history to project job offer pay, instead of offering to pay equitably. I urge Senator Mitch McConnell to put the Paycheck Fairness Act to a vote.”
