Haaland on Joy Harjo Being Named First Native American Poet Laureate

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01), one of the first Native American women serving in Congress, released the following statement after it was announced that Joy Harjo will be the first Native American to become U.S. Poet Laureate:

“Joy Harjo’s voice has been so important to the stories that need to be told, and now she’s making history as the 1st Native American United States Poet Laureate. Joy is a talented poet and has worked tirelessly leaving a ladder down for the next generation of creative writers. She is a distinguished professor, and she has had an extraordinary impact on my education while at the University of New Mexico. Her national platform to raise critical issues and highlight Native culture is what our country needs now.”
