WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01) announced this week that she will serve New Mexico military families and New Mexico’s First Congressional District on the U.S. House Armed Services Committee. The committee oversees defense policy, ongoing military operations, the organization and reform of the Department of Defense and Department of Energy, security, and Department of Defense humanitarian assistance.

“I grew up in a military family and fully understand the sacrifices our service members and their loved ones endure in service to our country. I’m looking forward to supporting our military families and our district by ensuring the Kirtland Air Force Base and Sandia National Labs have meaningful missions and the support to complete those missions through my role on the Armed Services Committee,” said Congresswoman Deb Haaland.

In 2016 Kirtland Air Force Base had a $4.1 billion local economic impact and employed almost eighteen thousand local employees. In 2017, Sandia National Labs employed more than twelve thousand people and contributed $3.1 billion to New Mexico’s economy.

New Mexico is home to five military installations: Cannon Air Force Base, Holloman Air Force Base, Kirtland Air Force Base, and White Sands Missile Range as well as Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories. Kirtland Air Force Base, which is located in  New Mexico’s First Congressional District, has missions in research, development and testing; readiness and training; munitions maintenance; and support to base operations. Sandia National Labs is a hub for innovation, technology, and research that contributes to national security and the tech transfer economy.
