Haaland on Supreme Court Census Decision

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Deb Haaland (NM-01) released the following statement after the Supreme Court postponed the adding of a citizenship question in the 2020 Census until such a time that the Department of Commerce is able to provide a proper justification. According to the Urban Institute, 72,600 New Mexicans at risk of being miscounted if a Citizenship question is added to the 2020 Census. 

“This Administration’s malicious attempt to add a citizenship question to the Census would hurt the most vulnerable in New Mexico. The decision to halt adding a citizenship question the census is a victory for now, but the fight is not over, and we will need every group, every leader, every organization to come together and ensure every New Mexican is counted and not afraid to be counted,” said Congresswoman Deb Haaland.
