Haaland to Honor Native Women Survivors Ahead of 25th Anniversary the Violence Against Women Act

Washington, D.C. – Tomorrow, Wednesday, September 11, 2019, Congressional Native American Caucus Co-Chairs Deb Haaland (NM-01) and Tom Cole (Okla.-4) will join tribal leaders from across Indian Country to honor native women survivors ahead of the 25thanniversary of the Violence Against Women Act. The bi-partisan event will showcase a traditional shawl ceremony and include remarks from the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center, National Congress of American Indians and survivors of domestic violence.
Attendees are encouraged to wear the color red to demonstrate solidarity with survivors and honor missing and murdered indigenous women.

Since its enactment in 1995, each reauthorization of VAWA has included important reforms that have increased the safety of Native women across the United States. This event will also call for the reauthorization VAWA and to take the next steps necessary to address the persistently high rates of violence experienced by Native women.
