WEDNESDAY, 9AM MT: U.S. Representatives Haaland, Neguse, Horsford, Lee, Stanton to Hold Press Call, as Need for Local Government Funding and Support for Western Firefighters Grows
Albuquerque, N.M. — Representative Deb Haaland (NM-01) along with Representatives Joe Neguse (Colo.-02), Steven Horsford (Nev.-04), Susie Lee (Nev.-03), and Greg Stanton (Ariz.-09) will host a press call for regional reporters today, Wednesday, May 6, at 9:00 am MT to discuss the need for local government funding and support for western firefighters and frontline public service workers in next Coronavirus aid package. As western states prepare for wildfire season, support for local firefighters and funds for local fire departments are especially critical. Direct funds for local city and county governments are essential to ensure that emergency personnel, first responders, firefighters and police can continue working to safeguard the community.
Western Democrats are fighting for critical aid that state and local governments need to pay healthcare workers, police, firefighters, teachers and other frontline public service workers during the crisis. But, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell – who blocked such aid in the most recent package – recently said he believes states should be forced to file bankruptcy, putting the livelihoods of frontline public service workers at risk.
